Three Ways to Explore Different Departments

In 2021, about 8% of CCU graduates had a double major or a minor degree, indicating that only a few students majored in different departments while they were in university. However, it is quite important to have a second major if you aim to be competitive in the future workplace. Therefore, there are three types of learning in different majors you should know, including double majors, minor degrees, and credit programs.

Additionally, minor degrees can also help students broaden their knowledge in universities. Minor degrees may be easier than double majors, and most only require half of the credits for a double major. Minor degrees are a common choice for students to take because they are easier to apply for and usually don’t delay graduation. Although minor degrees require fewer academic credits, they contain most important courses in the specific departments, making minor degrees the most common pursuit among college students.

Above all, the most well known one is double majors, which have big advantages and disadvantages. Double majors are the most challenging way to earn academic credits, and many students have to delay graduation because of the substantial courses in double majors. Despite the difficulties, this type of study in different majors has many benefits. For instance, you can fully develop a new skill and ability by taking courses from other departments, and this experience can help evolve a whole new ability that you can’t attain in your former major. Furthermore, studying in two distinct fields allows you to see the connection and prospect between the two.

Last but not least, credit programs are the best option for students who want to study in various fields. Credit programs typically cross diverse departments in universities, which are suitable for students wanting to learn more than one or two majors. While credit programs are useful in developing multiple skills, the low percentage of learning in one particular department may not help students fully understand and develop in different fields. In summary, credit programs are the best choice for exploring various fields but not the best option for students who want to major in different departments.

As mentioned, the most common three ways, double majors, minor degrees, and credit programs, are approachable to students during their college career. They are not quite hard to achieve, but quite helpful to expand the knowledge and abilities. All of them are beneficial for graduates when they enter the workforce or other fields, and we should seize the opportunities to expand our majors.
